What to Expect During Invisalign Treatment

Before your first aligners
Treatment starts with an iTero 5D scan at your consultation. You see a simulation of how your teeth could move, and Dr. Sophie goes over the plan and the price. Dr. Sophie is a general dentist who provides Invisalign. If your case needs more than aligners can do, she’ll tell you at this stage.
The first week
Expect pressure for the first two or three days with each new set. That’s the aligners doing their job. It usually fades by day three. Some people speak with a slight lisp for a day or two while their tongue gets used to the plastic.
You may also get small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments bonded to some teeth. They give the aligners something to grip so the teeth move the right way. They come off at the end of treatment.
Wearing your aligners day to day
- Wear them about 20 to 22 hours a day. They come out only to eat, drink anything other than plain water, and brush.
- Brush your teeth before putting the aligners back in, so food isn’t trapped against your teeth.
- Rinse the aligners and brush them gently with cool water. Hot water can warp them.
- Keep the case with you. Most lost aligners get wrapped in a napkin at a restaurant and thrown out.
Switching aligners and check-ins
You move to the next set in the series every one to two weeks, depending on your plan. You’ll come in for short check-ins so Dr. Sophie can make sure your teeth are tracking to plan. We’re open Wednesdays until 8 pm and Saturdays from 8 am to 3 pm, which makes these easier to fit around work.
Near the end
Sometimes a few teeth need a little more movement at the end. That’s handled with an extra set of aligners, called refinements. After that, the attachments come off and you get a retainer to hold your teeth in their new position. Wearing it as directed is what keeps the result.

Common questions
Does Invisalign hurt?
Most people feel pressure for a couple of days with each new set, not sharp pain. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually enough.
Can I drink coffee with my aligners in?
Take them out. Coffee, tea and anything sugary can stain the aligners and trap sugar against your teeth.
What happens if I lose an aligner?
Call us. Depending on where you are in treatment, you may move to the next set or wear the previous one while a replacement is made.
